Metabolism Secrets
The general understanding of metabolism is that it is the rate at which the body burns calories. This is a simplistic understanding, since metabolism consists of much more than that. Metabolism refers to either of the two processes:
- Rapid transformation of larva into an adult, which occurs in some animals.
- The organic processes in a cell or organism that is necessary for life.
It
is a set of chemical reactions that take place within the body that
allow the body to grow and reproduce. Although metabolic processes are
strikingly similar in all organisms, from unicellular bacteria to
elephants, the metabolism of a particular living being determines which
substance is nutritious or poisonous for it.
The drugs that we consume
also go through this process known as drug metabolism or xenobiotic (a
substance found in an organism that is not normally produced or
expected to be present in it) metabolism.
The rate at which the metabolic processes function determines the amount of calories the body burns. It is a well known fact that the metabolic rate is well connected to weight loss or gain, but what is not generally known is that there are ways and means by which a healthy metabolic rate can be maintained.
The
timing, amount of food, and the number of meals that we consume can
enhance your metabolic rate considerably. Skipping breakfast can hamper
metabolic rates. The body’s metabolism slows down at night,
and after
having rested for hours, it needs to be kick started in the morning. To
keep the metabolism going at steady rate, small but regular meals
should be taken.
Eating too much at a time inhibits metabolism, because
the metabolic processes slows down between meals. Moreover, make sure
that you consume the recommended quantity of calories every day,
because if you are starving, the metabolic rate slows down in order to
conserve energy. It is better to go for a low-calorie snack rather than
miss a meal simply to save calorie intake.
The type of food also determines the body’s metabolism. Eat a balanced diet comprised of the recommended percentage of carbohydrates, proteins, fats and fiber.Fiber is necessary, as high fiber foods like beans, vegetables and grains take longer to digest and help burn more calories. Proteins aid in burning more calories, but should be limited to lean meat. A touch of spices, especially chilies, helps in keeping the metabolism working at a steady pace even a few hours after meals.
The body’s metabolism continues to work even when the body is inactive. An active lifestyle helps in maintaining a healthy metabolic rate and aids natural weight loss. Walking, exercise and yoga can be used to burn calories at a faster rate. A healthy metabolic rate helps to lose weight, improves overall health and keeps the body better prepared to fight disease.
